I think it is a worms nest. It was really large too, about the size of a basketball.

This worm nest picks up a theme similiar to your dead deer photo: beauty in death. I say this because, the worms nest, most likely, is growing worms that will eventually kill the tree it's attatched too. Oh that infamous deer picture! It has quite the legacy: )
